2.17.10 Obama’s nuclear push could boost PPL plans

PPL’s plan to build a second nuclear power plant in Luzerne County and its expansion of a hydroelectric plant in Lancaster County could benefit from President Barack Obama’s proposal to add $36 billion in federal loan guarantees for power plant projects to the 2011 budget.

Obama on Tuesday announced more than $8 billion in federal loan guarantees –– similar to the government co-signing a loan –– for a new nuclear plant in Georgia, the first such plant in the country in nearly 30 years.

PPL in 2008 applied to the U.S. Department of Energy for similar loan guarantees to build Bell Bend, a proposed new nuclear plant next to its existing Susquehanna nuclear plant in Salem Township, near Berwick.
